What is Feng Shui?

In simple terms, Feng Shui is an ancient practice, originating from China that purports to use ancient energy forces to unify people with their surroundings. Oftentimes, this is done by consulting the astrological charts of both the east and west, along with consulting various local legends and folklore. These are all meant to predict certain types of interactions between people, and the placement of buildings and objects within a given space. The basic premise of this belief is that the flow of energy within a space can be altered by careful placement of objects within that space. Because energy is believed to influence matter (and therefore the quality of that matter), it can be said to govern physical reality.

One famous example of Feng Shui is the numerous shapes recognized throughout Chinese culture. For example, the tiger, dragon, and crane are all recognized as representing different aspects of the elements of metal, wood, fire, earth, and water respectively. The tiger is the sign of strength and dominance, the dragon represents creativity and thought, the crane is the symbol of knowledge and learning, and the wood element represents the water element. Each of these shapes are assigned a specific location in a home and can be used to either bring fortune to a home or take something away from it if not properly placed. There are other less well-known beliefs that are related to the world of Feng Shui. One is that it is possible to use the colour of one’s bedding to determine the health of that bed. According to many cultures, the colour of a person’s bed can dictate many aspects of their personality and can even determine how much success they have when sleeping!
