Roscamat Tapping Machine Power Supply Needs

Sorting out the power supply for your machine before it arrives can save a lot of problems.

Single-Phase or Three-Phase Supply

Most of the compact Roscamat models run on a simple 230 V single-phase power supply – that which is already in most UK workshops. Higher capacity versions require a 400 V three-phase power supply. Make sure you check the power requirements for the particular model of Roscamat Tapping Machine for which you are planning to install a power supply before the machine arrives and check with your DNO to see if they can supply a three-phase supply to your workshop as a single-phase supply is the standard. If not, it could take some time to set up and may cost several hundred pounds through your DNO.

Confirm Amperage Ratings

Voltage does not tell the whole story. The power required by the machine must be compared with the current capacity of the existing supply or of the new spur to be installed. A 16 A spur is usually sufficient for a single phase Roscamat Tapping Machine but check the current rating for the specific model for which a power supply is required.

Voltage Stabilisers for Inconsistent Supply

If your workshop is at the end of a long supply run, or you have shared supply to heavy plants, then the supply to the Roscamat can fluctuate. This will have an adverse effect on the motor and the control electronics. The use of a voltage stabiliser would therefore be wise to consider.

Cable Run Length

Voltage drop occurs over long distances. Typically a 20m run is considered maximum for a single tapping machine. Longer runs can be used, but then the cable needs to be thicker. A spark can calculate the correct cable for you for the length of run that you require.

Check Your Consumer Unit First

Ensure that the power supply for any machines to be installed is correctly sized for the application and that the relevant checks are made to the consumer unit prior to the installation of any powered equipment. The HSE’s guidance on the safe use of electricity at work sets out the relevant checks for use in a workshop.
