How to make your wooden floors less slippery

Spread the love

Wooden floors have been experiencing something of a revival when it comes to home and office décor, with people appreciating how beautiful they are, and also the value they can add to the property. They are durable and hard-wearing, which is perfect in businesses or areas that experience high traffic.

They can sometimes be slippery, however, especially if they have been polished. There are certain finishes and tricks that can be employed to make the floor less hazardous, though.

Pick the right finish

Thinking ahead is not always possible, but is a good idea if you can. You might move into a house with a partner or a new business premises and opt for highly polished floors, but then a few years later the glossy finish is too much for unsteady feet. Consider your anticipated future situation, as well as the current one.

Hardwood or engineered flooring can be polished to make it super shiny and show off the grain, or it can be coated with a matte polyurethane, which isn’t as shiny, but nor is it as slippery.

DIY and hardware stores stock non-slip treatments that can be used weekly to both prolong the life of the floor and reduce the risk of accidents. Linoleum floors can also be treated in the same way.

If you prefer not to use chemicals, vinegar will work well too. Mix a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of water and mop the floor with the warm solution.

Non-slip pads

Sometimes, the easiest and most effective way to make floors less slippery is to put non-slip pads on the bottom of doormats, carpets and runners, as they can prevent a whole host of slip accidents. Place them at entrances, at the bottom of stairs and in other high-traffic areas.

You can also find items that you place on the wheels of Operator Chairs like the ones that you can find at https://www.bestbuy-officechairs.co.uk/office-chairs/operator-chairs/ to help prevent them skidding across your wooden flooring.  Once you have chosen the right flooring for you, look up more ideas on how to keep your floors slip-free, by visiting Build Direct.

Above all, don’t forget that this is your home and you should be comfortable there, so choose a décor that will work in your home, for your family, and don’t be afraid to change it if it no longer works.
