Worn Tie Rod Ends
Knocking or clunking noise travelling with the vehicle while driving on bumps or uneven road surfaces. Typically worse at low speeds. Typically worse when turning.
Split or Damaged Rack Gaiters
The rubber rack gaiters are supposed to keep dirt and moisture out of the steering rack. If the gaiters for your rack split, grit will get into the rack and can cause a severe grinding noise, especially over rough roads. Early detection of a split gaiter can prevent further damage.
Low or Degraded Power Steering Fluid
Whine or Moan Sound: Check Power Steering Fluid Levels and Quality. A whine or moan sound from your Audi, especially from cold temperatures, could indicate that your power steering system is running low on fluid. Incorrect fluid, even attempts to top up, can even make this problem worse. Refer to your Audi owner’s manual for correct power steering fluid type and specification.
Worn Steering Rack Bushes
In addition to steering rack wear, noise can also be generated by the rack-end bushes. Worn bushes in this area can create a clunking sound when locking full lock and/or repeating lock-to-lock movement.
